Commitment to Diversity

The Huerta Lab is committed to fostering a safe and supportive work environment for all: Research has shown that social diversity (including worldviews, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation) leads to innovation. Thus, a socially diverse working team composed of people with individual expertise and diverse life experiences is better at solving complex, non-routine problems like those that often limit scientific advancement. This occurs not only because different backgrounds bring different perspectives, but also because differences force people to prepare better, to anticipate alternative viewpoints, and to integrate and advance new ideas through effective communication.

Dr. Huerta is a strong advocate of the value of diverse perspectives for the development of necessary and innovative solutions to complex societal and scientific challenges. She is committed to upholding the four objectives of the NCSU’s diversity mission:

1) promoting, recruiting, and retaining scholars of diverse backgrounds in the University

2) fostering collaboration and idea exchange among individuals of diverse background

3) encouraging respect in all spaces

4) preparing leaders to live and work in a competitive and harmonious global community.
